Protesting the Inauguration

UPDATED WITH ADDITIONAL EVENTS 1/19, 8 P.M. – At the checkout counter at Target, the clerk noted the Black Lives Matter button on my coat and asked me, “Going to the march?” I told her yes, and she went on to say that the website was down this morning, so she had been unable to sign in. She was talking about Saturday’s Minnesota Women’s March. That’s not the only march this week (and not the only one I plan to go to.)

I’ve noticed that the various demonstrations, while all protesting the incoming administration, sometimes seem to draw from entirely different communities that don’t talk to each other. For example, I’ve talked to friends who are going to the Minnesota Women’s March on Saturday, but haven’t heard of the Resist From Day One mega-march on Friday. I’ve seen calendars that list one or the other, but no calendars that list both. Besides the two big marches, many smaller events also offer ways to join in solidarity. So – here’s my big list of inauguration protests in the Twin Cities, quite likely incomplete, but with plenty of ways to opt in.

Here’s a list, with details below for each event, in chronological order. If you have another event, please feel free to add it in the comments.

  • January 19: Nasty Woman: Night b4 Inauguration
  • January 20: Historic Strike Against Trump & Poverty Wages

Public Schools loudly and clearly proclaim themselves sanctuaries for our students and their families and commit to funding our public schools.” (Organizer: St. Paul Federation of Teachers)

Thursday, January 19, 8 p.m.-2 a.m. – Muse Event Center · Minneapolis. “Tis the night before Inauguration… The man we don’t speak of, is about to assume position. January 20

Friday, January 20, 5:30 a.m.-10 a.m. at 1520 New Brighton Blvd, Minneapolis, MN 55413

“On January 20, Donald Trump’s Inauguration Day, janitors who clean Home Depot stores in the Twin Cities will go on strike against their cleaning contractor to protest their poverty wages and Donald Trump’s anti-worker agenda – the first strike against Donald Trump in the country since his election.

“The two founders of Home Depot have donated millions of dollars to Trump and one of Home Depot’s major investors supports Trump. Home Depot uses the Trump model of business for its janitorial services: using subcontractors that hire immigrant workers and sometimes face lawsuits for wage theft. (Organizer: CTUL)”
