What’s wrong with part-time jobs — and what we can do about it

Almost one in five U.S. workers has a part-time job. Some people work part-time because it suits them, like a $100 an hour computer programmer. But more of them are like the part-timers featured in a 2014 New York Times article, and the 400+ people who wrote in to comment on it. Liz from Wheaton, Illinois, commented:

“As an RN with a master’s degree, you’d think I would fare better, but no. One Christmas Day not so long ago I was scheduled to work the 3-11 shift at the local hospital. I showed up for my shift but was told, “Didn’t someone call you? Our census is down and we don’t need you. But stay by your phone because you are on call for the next four hours” (without pay).”

Today’s MN state lay-off notices — here’s the list

From 15 people at the Bureau of Mediation Services to 115 at the Perpich Center for Arts Education to more than 4,000 at the Department of Natural Resources, lay-off notices go out to Minnesota state employees today. NEWS DAY | Good news in Minnesota and disasters in Pakistan, Russia

Minnesota added 9,800 jobs in July, and the unemployment rate held steady at 6.8 percent, compared to a national unemployment rate of 9.5 percent. The increase in jobs is particularly significant, given that government employment in Minnesota dropped by 9,100, including 1,400 temporary census jobs. Continue reading

NEWS DAY | Work and home at risk

The latest federal unemployment statistics, released August 5, show a 9.5 percent July unemployment rate, unchanged since June. The total number of unemployed people, both those officially counted because they have actively sought work within the past four weeks, plus those who are marginally attached to the labor force, or work part time for economic reasons, also remained the same, at 16.5 percent. NEWS DAY | Let them eat cake: Emmer advocates cutting food servers’ wages

How to end the recession? Start by cutting the wages of those overpaid waiters, says Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer. Emmer said that Minnesota should factor tips into the hourly pay for minimum wage workers in restaurants and other gratuity-based jobs. Emmer wants Minnesota to take advantage of a federal provision that allows employers to pay tipped employees as little as $2.13 per hour. Killing unemployment comp extensions – and hope

Republicans in the Senate (joined by Nebraska Democrat Ben Nelson and Connecticut Independent Joe Lieberman) killed the unemployment compensation extension and more last week, claiming that the country can’t afford to add to the deficit. The bill that was killed, as described by The Hill, included tax breaks and aid to states, as well as the unemployment benefit extension and a delay in Medicare payment cuts to doctors. Cutting the deficit, however, is bad news for the stumbling recovery. Continue reading

Unemployment numbers, MN nurses, Gaza news, BP cap

Officially, unemployment fell slightly in May, to a seasonally adjusted 9.7 percent. The total unemployment figure, including those who are marginally attached to the workforce, discouraged workers, and those working part-time because they cannot find full-time work – seasonally adjusted at 16.6 percent.
